Working abroad as a benefit

Contentway's campaign “Neues Arbeiten und Lernen”, distributed with DIE WELT on 21 March 2024, features WorkFlex on the question of how working from abroad turns into a benefit employers can actually offer.

From trend to standard benefit

Unlike regular home office, a workation temporarily moves the workplace abroad for a set number of days per year. Co-founder Patrick Koch points out that workations have moved from a trend to a near-standard benefit: 29 of the DAX 40 companies now offer mobile work abroad. Many employers still hesitate because of the administrative effort and the tax and legal requirements involved.

Every workation is a case of its own

Co-founder Pieter Manden, formerly in remote compliance at PwC, explains that the rules depend on the home and destination country, the employee's nationality, the combination of countries and even the employee's role: work permits, permanent establishment, payroll tax, social security and local labour law all come into play. Getting it wrong can lead to fines, deportation or business bans.

With WorkFlex, employees request their stay on the platform, their manager approves it, and WorkFlex experts assess the risk of each case and set the necessary steps in motion, transparently for the customer. Companies such as BioNTech, Vodafone, Flix and Scout24 use WorkFlex. The article also shows that employees born from 1986 onwards, Generation Y, account for 75% of workation requests.
